IRMO, S.C. (WACH FOX NEWS) — If you're a parent then you know just how difficult it can be to get your children to eat healthy. Well, now you're in luck because a local cooking school is here to help. On this week's "Hometown Hotspot," WACH FOX heads to Irmo, S.C. for some sizzling tips.
Slicing and dicing are just two techniques used at Healthy Hands Cooking. What may seem like a difficult chore has one picky eater learning to keep an opened mind. "I don't like broccoli. I don't like seafood and I don't like brussel sprouts," says Emma Hope.
Evan Outlaw loves food and cooking, but he doesn't always eat the healthiest option.
In fact, his sweet tooth is what he needs to work on. "Eat healthy. Stop eating junk food like candy," he says.
According to the CDC, about 1-in-5 children in the U.S. are considered obese.
Certified Instructor Judy Etheredge is cooking to educate children about nutrition and says that healthy eating starts at home. "We're busy and we don't take the time or take the time to prepare those healthy foods or have them available for our children," explains Etheredge.
During a Healthy Hands Cooking four-day camp, the chefs-in-training not only get to try new and different foods but learn how to cook healthier meals. "To make it easy and simple is that we keep ingredients to a minimum. We keep the ingredients fresh and as whole as possible," she says. With an emphasis on fruits and vegetables in overall health, smoothies, salads, stir-fry and pizzas win the little taste buds over. "I love them!" adds Hope. Where all you need is a pinch of fun and a dash of motivation to make some real good food.
Healthy Hands Cooking offers cooking classes not only for children but people of all ages (2-years-old through seniors) and all abilities. It also has cooking events regularly planned throughout the year including for athletes, those with diabetes, themed parties like birthday parties and team building exercises for adults.
